Difference Between Stainless Steel Grade 304 and Grade 316

Stainless Steel 304 vs 316: Which Grade Should You Use in the UAE?
When sourcing stainless steel plates, nameplates, or equipment tags in the UAE, grade selection is one of the first decisions that affects long-term performance. The two grades most commonly used for industrial identification and signage are 304 and 316.
What Is Grade 304 Stainless Steel?
Stainless Steel Grade 304 is the most popular for metal tags.
The grade 304 contains approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel, it's a solid corrosion resistance for indoor environments. It's the right choice for most environments, for control room nameplates, switchgear tags, office signage, and internal equipment labels. But it falls short in coastal, saltwater, or chloride-heavy environments.
What Is Grade 316 Stainless Steel?
Grade 316 adds molybdenum (~2–3%) to the composition, dramatically improving resistance to chloride attack. The correct specification for outdoor UAE installations, marine equipment tags, offshore oil and gas components, desalination plates, and any environment with salt air, humidity, or industrial chemical exposure.
Which Grade Is Right for Your Project?
Choose Stainless Steel 304 for indoor/sheltered, and some outdoors. And choose Stainless Steel 316 for harsh outdoor, marine, coastal, chemical environments.
